Her grandfather’s will says only that the gate stays shut. The sheep agree. A folk horror story about land, family and old promises.

The paddock was in the middle of the farm, twelve acres of the best grass in the valley, fenced in old wire and hardwood posts. The gate was chained with three padlocks. The grass inside was knee-high and green in a dry year, and not one sheep had ever been in it. Jess’s grandfather’s will ran to four pages. Three of them were about the house and the flock. The last page said only: The gate on the middle paddock stays shut. Mum knows why. Her mother had died in 2011.

Tess Harrow

I grew up on a sheep farm near Bothwell, which is about as far from anything as you can get in Tasmania, and I have been scaring my younger brothers since I could talk. Now I work at a maritime museum on the Hobart waterfront, cataloguing things that came out of shipwrecks. Some of them should have stayed there. My horror is slow and quiet. Nobody gets chased with a chainsaw. Something is wrong in the house, and you notice it a little too late. I live in North Hobart with my partner and a greyhound who is afraid of the dark.
