When her husband dies in the winter of 1893, Luz Ortega has three children, a loom and a land grant a railroad lawyer says is worthless. She weaves blankets through the winter to pay a surveyor, a translator and a judge in Santa Fe who has never been north of the plaza. A historical novel about craft, land and patience in the years before New Mexico became a state.
Luz Ortega buried her husband on the second of January, in ground so hard the men took turns with the pick. The next morning she went to the loom, because the loom did not care who had died, and she counted threads by candlelight until the children woke. The pattern was her grandmother’s: eight-pointed stars in red and indigo on natural wool. A good blanket took six weeks. The railroad lawyer in Santa Fe had given her until Easter to prove the land was hers.

About the author
Rosa Delgado Hart
I taught American history at Santa Fe High School for thirty-one years, and for most of that time my students asked me why the textbook never mentioned anybody they were related to. So I started writing it down. My family has farmed the same land near Chimayó since before New Mexico was a state, and the stories come with it: land grants, weavers, acequia disputes that lasted longer than marriages. I write memoir about my own life and historical fiction about the lives I only heard about. I live in an old adobe house with a leaking roof, a husband named Tom and far too many chile plants.
