About this book

Delphine Aucoin rides the St. Charles streetcar home after every night shift at Touro. Most nights it is her, the driver and a man asleep against the window. Then one night the car stops at a station with a gas lamp and a wooden bench, a station that was torn out in 1951, and the woman waiting there is wearing a nurse’s cap from another century. A short, sad and unsettling ghost story about the people who look after us, and the ones who never stopped.

Look inside · First chapter

Delphine caught the 2:10 at Louisiana Avenue every night that she worked, which was five nights out of seven and some weeks six. The car came rocking down St. Charles under the oaks with its windows lit yellow and its bell ringing for nobody, because there was nobody on the neutral ground at that hour except her and the cats. The driver was always the same, an older man named Mr. Toussaint who nodded at her and never spoke. There was always a man asleep against the third window on the river side

Great atmosphere
You can hear the bell and smell the oaks. A little short, but it does not waste a line.

For every night nurse
I work nights at a hospital in Baton Rouge. This book understood me in a way that scared me a little.

Beautiful and creepy
I cried at the end, which I did not expect from a ghost story. The station with the gas lamp is so vivid.

About the author

S. L. Marchand

I spent thirty years in the engine rooms of Mississippi riverboats, mostly at night, mostly alone with a lot of machinery that knocked when it wanted attention. You learn to listen down there. You learn that a river has moods and a boat has opinions. I retired to a shotgun house in the Bywater with a porch, a fig tree and a neighbor who tells me every ghost story she has ever heard, twice. My books are not about blood. They are about the sound in the wall that stops when you stand up, and the streetcar that comes by one stop too many. I write at the kitchen table after midnight, which my wife says is the problem.
