About this book

For the anniversary of the great bell’s recasting, Margaret Oddie is invited to ring one last peal in the tower of York Minster. Halfway up the stairs she finds a cashbox that should have been in the vestry safe, and a treasurer who should have been at home. The second Margaret Oddie mystery.

Look inside · First chapter

There were two hundred and seventy-five steps to the ringing chamber of the Minster’s south-west tower, and Margaret Oddie counted every one of them. At sixty-three she did not climb stairs so much as negotiate with them. On the hundred and fortieth step she found a green cashbox wedged behind a stone ledge. It was the vestry committee’s cashbox. She knew because she had counted the Christmas collection into it for fifteen years.

Another good one
The details about bell-ringing are wonderful. Margaret is so sharp.

About the author

Philippa Marsh

I was clerk to a parish council outside York for twenty-six years, which is the finest training for a crime writer that exists. Every murder in my books has a motive I once saw minuted. My detective, Margaret Oddie, is a retired bell-ringer who notices things because nobody notices her. I write at the kitchen table of a narrow house off Bishopthorpe Road, with a view of a wall and a very old cat called Inspector. I have been married to a patient man named Graham since 1990, and I walk the city walls every morning to plot.
