After her father’s stroke, Emi Kessler finds a ferry schedule in his coat pocket with one crossing circled and one word written in the margin, in Japanese, that she can’t quite read. She begins riding the 7:55 from Colman Dock every morning, looking for whatever he was looking for. A short, quiet novel about language, family and the thirty-five minutes between two shores.
The schedule was folded into quarters in the pocket of his rain jacket, soft from being handled. One crossing was circled in pencil: the 7:55 from Colman Dock to Bainbridge. In the margin, in her father’s careful Japanese, was a single word she could read only half of. Emi’s father had not spoken since the stroke. He could hold a spoon and turn his head toward the window. The doctors said language sometimes came back, and sometimes it came back as something else.

About the author
Hana Mori
I was born in Tacoma to a Japanese mother and a German father who met on a ferry, which is probably why I keep writing about ferries. I studied marine biology, worked on a fishing boat for two summers, and now I work at a used bookshop in Ballard where I am allowed to read at the counter. My fiction is quiet. It is about families who don’t say things, and the long rides across the Sound where they almost do. The Ferry Schedules is my first book. I am writing the second one very slowly.
