The first week after my sister Bernice passed, I made a whole pot of rice every night. Three cups dry, same as always. Clarence was traveling to see his brother in Columbia and I was alone in the house, and every night I made rice for six and put five portions in the freezer.
By Friday the freezer would not close. I stood there with the door open and the cold coming out at me and I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the kitchen floor. Then I cried for a while, and then I got up and figured out how to cook half a cup of rice, which it turns out is harder than cooking three.
This is as far as the free sample goes — the rest of Supper for One is waiting for you.
