About this book

Most habit books are written for your best week. This one is written for your worst. Arjun Mehta, a Toronto physiotherapist, shares what he learned from hundreds of patients rebuilding strength one small session at a time: why ten minutes beats an hour, how to restart without guilt, and what his parents’ first Canadian winter taught him about showing up. Practical, short and honest.

Look inside · First chapter

My parents landed at Pearson in January 1994 with two suitcases and a pressure cooker. My mother had packed the cooker in the middle of her clothes, wrapped in a sari, because she had heard that Canadian rice was different and she did not trust it. That first winter my father worked nights at a bakery in Rexdale and my mother cleaned offices downtown. They did not have a plan for personal growth. They had a routine: dal on Sunday, calls home on the first of the month, English lessons on Tuesday

About the author

Arjun Mehta

I am a physiotherapist in Scarborough. Most of my work is helping people do one more rep than they did last week, and most of what I know about change I learned from watching them. My parents came to Toronto from Ahmedabad in 1994 with two suitcases and a pressure cooker, and they never once talked about motivation. They talked about showing up. Small Wins, Long Winters is the book I wish someone had handed me during my first Canadian winter as a student, when I stopped doing almost everything. It is short on purpose.
