The note was folded into eighths and tucked into chapter nine of a large print copy of A Murder Is Announced. Dot found it on Tuesday while checking returns for bookmarks, which people left in books with alarming regularity: bank statements, postcards from Florida, once a winning lottery ticket that turned out to be worth four dollars.
This note said, in handwriting so small she needed her reading glasses and then a magnifying glass: Blue car. Tuesdays and Fridays. 2:15. Always the side door.
The book had been returned by Delmar Nygaard, eighty-one, who had told every clerk at the branch for eleven years that he could not read anything smaller than eighteen point type.
