I was born in Tacoma to a Japanese mother and a German father who met on a ferry, which is probably why I keep writing about ferries. I studied marine biology, worked on a fishing boat for two summers, and now I work at a used bookshop in Ballard where I am allowed to read at the counter. My fiction is quiet. It is about families who don’t say things, and the long rides across the Sound where they almost do. The Ferry Schedules is my first book. I am writing the second one very slowly.
